Saint-Marcel
Indre, Creuse ... Tourism in the Berry
Nestling between the castles of the Loire and the characterful hills of the Limousin, the enchanting land of the Berry displays its finery made-up of secret gardens, ponds and rivers serving as backdrops for some of the most beautiful villages in France and the landscapes of George Sand: Gargilesse-Dampierre or Saint Benoît du Sault; Nohant, La Châtre, la Mare au Diable ... And of course, just a few minutes from our hotel, the Venice of Berry, Argenton-sur-Creuse, which, to the rhythm of the current of the Creuse, reveals its picturesque alleys, old water-wheel mills and other houses with wooden galleries "suspended" above the river.
For a nice introduction, our medieval village of Saint-Marcel, ideally located at the gates of the ancient Gallo-Roman town and at the threshold of the eastern limit of the Brenne Regional Natural Park, reveals its rich heritage.
Overlooking the valley of the Creuse, its 12th century Romanesque church (on a 8th century Romano-Byzantine crypt) and its treasure, its semi-pedestrian paved streets, its half-timbered houses, its winegrowers' houses, its ramparts, its priory fort and its four city gates are a few examples.
Even closer, just a few hundred meters behind the hotel, the modern architecture of the Archaeological Museum of Argentomagus has been blending into the landscape of the surrounding countryside since 1990. The Gallo-Roman site that it overlooks invites you to discover testimonies of the prosperity of the village which at one time counted up to 5000 inhabitants.
There is definitely no shortage of ideas for discoveries around the Priory ... You can count on us to advise you during your stay
